Misaligned teeth are harder to clean and can contribute to gum and bone loss, tooth decay, abnormal wear of the tooth enamel and surfaces, headaches and jaw joint (TMJ/TMD) pain. We work with your dentist to assure that your orthodontic treatment contributes toward your overall dental health and well-being. Some adult patients have bite problems which are quite severe due to underlying jaw-size problems (e.g., a lower jaw which is too prominent or retrusive, or a very gummy smile due to excessive vertical growth of the upper jaw). In such situations, the facial profile is often poorly-proportioned and could be much improved. Such problems are often best corrected through a combination of braces and jaw surgery. Dr. Joiner, working with local oral surgeons, has completed hundreds of such cases, with dramatic and very aesthetically gratifying outcomes.
Many adults considering orthodontics worry about the aesthetics of orthodontic treatment and the length of treatment. We can assure you that orthodontics has advanced tremendously in recent years. The new techniques and appliances we use greatly reduce discomfort levels, decrease the frequency of visits, and shorten treatment time. The majority of our adult patients choose clear ceramic braces for their upper teeth and are very happy with the appearance; these braces (In-Ovation C) do not discolor with time and do not require anything placed over them to hold the wire in place which might discolor. The braces look as good at the end of treatment as they do on the first day.
Many adults may also be treated with clear, removable aligners (Invisalign). We have treated more adults with Invisalign aligners than any other full-time orthodontic practice in Santa Cruz County, and this level of experience translates into fine outcomes.
