Meet the Orthodontist
| Dr. Joiner's orthodontic practice has thrived over the years as an outgrowth of his relaxed, down-to-earth personality and approachable nature, which make him the ideal practitioner for young children, adolescents, and adults. Dr. Joiner's cheerful, open manner make each appointment a pleasure. A talented, detail-oriented orthodontist as well as an excellent listener and communicator, Dr. Joiner cares that every patient has a great experience in the office in addition to attaining an outstanding orthodontic result. Whether he's helping a young child who needs an especially patient, gentle touch, or an adult who loves to know every detail of their treatment, Dr. Joiner does whatever it takes to meet the needs of that patient. Dr. Joiner is proud to be a third-generation Santa Cruzan! He attended schools in Aptos and graduated from Aptos High School before attending Cabrillo College, then received a Bachelor's degree at Baylor University in Texas. After receiving a Master's degree in Biology, Dr. Joiner graduated with a D.D.S. degree from UCLA Dental School. He then completed a 2-year orthodontic residency and received his specialty certificate in Orthodontics at University of California at San Francisco, at that time considered one of the three finest orthodontic programs in the country. After associating for a year in another orthodontic office, Dr. Joiner realized there was a place in Santa Cruz for a new, state-of-the-art orthodontic practice, where he could pursue his ideals of delivering orthodontic excellence in a caring, fun atmosphere. He opened his own practice in 1986 and has enjoyed the process of keeping it "state-of-the-art" and making it, with the help of his extraordinary staff, into the place known for creating "Santa Cruz's brightest smiles"! Dr. Joiner now lives, with his wife Roberta, very close to where his grandparents operated a chicken hatchery in Happy Valley! They have three animated Portuguese Water Dogs (now famous thanks to Bo in Washington D.C.). They enjoy long walks on the beach and have been scuba diving for many years (Mark and Roberta, not the dogs!). In addition to Dr. Joiner's passion for orthodontics and his patients, Dr. Joiner has a love of nature and has been on many a backpacking trip in the Sierras, and enjoys skiing, golfing and woodworking. Over the years, Dr. Joiner has supported several dozen local sports teams, as well as youth-oriented arts activities, and he enjoys keeping up with his patients' involvement in school athletics, arts programs and other extracurricular activities. Dr. Joiner is quite musical, currently playing trombone in a local brass ensemble, but his patients know him better for his humming and whistling! Dr. Joiner is a member and active participant in several dental organizations, including: The American Board of Orthodontics ![]() The mission of The American Board of Orthodontics is to establish and maintain the highest standards of clinical excellence in orthodontics. www.americanboardortho.com American Association of Orthodontists
